Responsible Event Framework

In 2017, the Council for Responsible Sport teamed up with the City of Eugene and with generous support from the Urban Sustainability Director's Network mapped the work of planning and delivering more responsible events that generate benefits for all stakeholder groups involved.

This practical guide explains how sporting events can show true leadership by eliminating single-use plastic from their sites and advocating throughout their supply chain and audiences. With the potential for sporting events to generate hundreds of thousands of pieces of otherwise avoidable single-use plastic, the pressure is on to clean-up quick and to use sport’s global reach to raise awareness and action amongst our competitors, fans, spectators and supply chain.

Runners for Public Lands is an inclusive running community dedicated to environmental justice, advocacy, and stewardship. Launched on Earth Day, 2019, and based in Ventura, California, Runners for Public Lands is 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental organization committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.


The Running Industry Diversity Coalition unites the running industry to provide resources, measure progress, and hold the industry accountable to equitable employment, leadership, and ownership positions and improve inclusion, visibility, and access for Black, Indigenous, and people of color.


The Green Sports Alliance shares resources, experience, and expertise to raise awareness of what’s environmentally possible in sports, business, and society. It seeks to mobilize sports organizations, communities, athletes, and fans to create sustainable progress and behavior change.


Sport and Sustainability International envisions a sport sector that addresses its impact and leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable and equal communities. Programs include Football 4 Climate and SDG Lab, a creative platform to encourage, share and support initiatives that use sport to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
